You may not believe this, but in as much as GMRS and FRS are alike, one is the oldest personal radio service, while the other is one of the newest.

GMRS has been around longer than what we now know as CB radio. The current citizens band frequencies were carved out of the old 11-meter amateur radio band, much to the consternation of hams, at 26 and 27 MHz in 1957 with the new band taking hold in 1958.
